Pohutukawa honey (January 2009 vintage)
Colin and Delcie are passionate about organic honey. They have lived in the idyllic Coromandel for the past 25 years. Colin kept a few hives as a child and has always been fascinated by bees.
The couple entered the world of professional beekeeping in 1994 when they bought their first hives from a friend. Their hive numbers have grown from 340 to 1200 today.
Colin and Delcie's hives are located in remote spots nestled within the wild and pristine Coromandel peninsula in a naturally organic native environment, far away from any cities or intensive horticulture. The region is renowned for its picturesque and secluded golden sand beaches, native Manuka covered hills and forests and abundant Pohutukawa trees — the source of NZ Artisan’s Honey Pohutukawa Honey.
To ensure the honey remains pure and natural, Colin and Delcie take extra care when extracting it from the hives. Within hours of removing the frames of honey from the hives, the honey is extracted by cold process. There is no heating or super-fine filtering as is practiced in more commercial honey production. This ensures the honey retains its natural flavours and goodness, and can be enjoyed just as nature intended.
