Honey is made from the nectar that the honey bee collects from flowers. The nectar is a liquid produced by flowering plants to attract the insects needed to ensure pollination. The nectar is collected by the bee with its tongue and is stored in the hive.
Worker bees add enzyme to the nectar and transfer it to wax storage chambers, (honey comb). During the process water is evaporated and the nectar becomes honey. It takes 5 litres of nectar to produce 1 litre of honey.

Honey bees must fly the equivalent, (relative to humans) of three times around the globe to gather a single teaspoon of honey. We think that makes them pretty special!
