Muzzle Station is one of the most remote high-country sheep and cattle stations in New Zealand. Which must make Muzzle Station bees some of the most remote honey bees in New Zealand.
The 30,000 hectare station is located in the Clarence Valley which is nestled amongst the 6000ft Kaikoura Ranges in central Marlborough in New Zealand’s South Island. The rugged valley is known for its hot, dry summers and wild landscape.
Muzzle Station is only accessible by air in a light plane when the weather is good or by road on a four-wheel drive track during summertime.

The Nimmo family have owned Muzzle Station for nearly three decades. They’ve been collecting honey from hives on the property for 20 years. The latest recruit is youngest daughter Lucy and her partner AJ, who have taken over the beekeeping. Lucy grew up on the station so is very familiar with its isolation and challenging terrain.
The Nimmo family specialise in Vipers Bugloss wild flower honey, which they collect for J.Friend and Co: NZ Artisan Honey. From December to March, vivid blue fields of tall Vipers Bugloss wildflowers cover the mountain and riversides across the valley. In a good season a small amount of very pure Manuka honey is also collected and made available to us. The hives are accessed by four-wheel drive and the honey is extracted in small batches on the station.
