Certified OrganicOrganic & environmentally sustainable
The certified organic status of our products is vitally important to us as it ensures the purity, the quality and sustainability of the product and the processes that are used to bring the honey from the hive to the plate. It is important to us that NZ Artisan Honey stays pure throughout the entire process and being certified organic guarantees this.
NZ Artisan Honey is focused on being an environmentally responsible company. Each of our honey products are clearly labelled with the floral source and packaged in simple, clear glass jars so that nothing interferes with its natural taste and simplicity.
How can honey be organic?
Honeybees generally only fly around 2km from the hive so to ensure they are foraging in a safe organic environment the beekeeper must make sure a 3km radius surrounding the hive is certified organic land.
In New Zealand many organic hives are placed in remote wild bushland areas and forests where there is an abundance of native flowers for the bees to forage on, away from intensive farming and horticulture – whether it be in a remote hill station in the South Island or in the dense native forests on the North Island’s picturesque Coromandel peninsula.
As well as their environment, there are a number of other factors that make organic honey unique. The way the hive is constructed, the careful selection of hardy bee species that are naturally more resistant to pests and diseases, the welfare of the bees and the way they are kept within the hive.
Strictly no chemical sprays or treatments are allowed to be used on the hives or surrounding environment at any stage.
Certified organic honey has to meet rigorous and extensive monitoring and testing criteria of the certification body. Any honey that claims to be certified organic is also tested to guarantee that it does not contain any residues of pesticides or environmental pollutants.
All of NZ Artisan Honey’s products are certified to the AsureQuality Organic Standard. This is vitally important to us as it ensures the purity, the quality and sustainability of the product and the processes that are used to bring the honey from the hive to the plate. It is important to us that NZ Artisan Honey stays pure throughout the entire process and being certified organic guarantees this.
carboNZero certified
We are also committed to reducing our negative impact on the environment and ensuring the planet's future survival for generations to come. This is why we are part of the carboNZero certification programme, which involves measuring and managing (reducing) our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and then purchasing verified carbon credits to offset the remaining emissions we can not avoid.
To achieve carboNZero certification we undertook an extensive review of our impact on the environment. This included measuring all greenhouse gas emissions, making a commitment to manage and reduce any emissions at source, and then mitigating or offsetting any remaining, unavoidable emissions. Our business practices were then reviewed by an external audit. We have been carboNZero certified since our inception -you’ll see the carboNZero certification mark proudly displayed by our business.
To help reduce our environmental impact we also reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible, use and create minimum packaging and use only recyclable and reusable packaging.
